“During my 3 year stay in the historical city of Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain, I would often sit in the “Plaza Quintana“ looking out over the majestic and beautiful façade of the baroque cathedral and also at the walls of a convent, behind which the nuns lived, abiding by strict rules… I was fascinated not only by the architecture but also by the sense of something forbidden. Some days I went into the adjoining chapel to listen to the singing of these women, who live in confinement. The sound of their voices inspired my 11 portraits in black INK.”
